The exact origin of water pipe smoking is uncertain. Much research was conducted and it yielded different conclusions. America, Persia, Africa; all those regions where thought to be the regions of origin of water pipe smoking.

What we know for sure is that the use of water pipe spread during the same time as coffee and tobacco, between the 16th and 17th centuries. Then it spread to the Middle Eastern, North African, and Persian lands where it became popular among all social classes. This is mainly due to the Arab culture which favors long discussions and gatherings. Enjoying a water pipe and looking at people passing by, playing backgammon, listening to poems are all activities that are not seen at all as a lost of time. On the contrary, they arean occasions to meet with friends, share ideas, and relax. Water pipe smoking is a great means of social gathering.

Unlike cigarettes that are made for people on the run, water pipe smoking is for people who like to take the time to relax and to clear their heads from all the stress of modern life.
After having spread throughout the Middle Eastern region where it became part of its cultural heritage, there is a very important increase in the use of water pipe in Western Countries.
